Reviews: Fiskars 7884 X27 36-Inch Super Splitting Axe
I was looking for a splitting axe to quarter some of my fireplace wood, had some 12" diameter logs. I first ordered a Gerber from Cabellas by the good reviews, but returned it after seeing how short the handle was. If i was back packing or camping those short handles make sense, but I needed an axe for splitting firewood at home.
So then I read reviews on the Fiskars X27 with the 36" handle. If you're looking for an axe that can make quick work of 12" logs this is the one you want! I don't know about big slab rounds, you may have to get a heavy splitting maul and wedges, but for firewood splitting I'll take this axe over a heavy maul, 8 of 10 one strike splits. Amazon was right on with their shipping commitment even arrived earlier. The Fiskars and Gerber heads look identical, I think Gerber contracts out to Fiskars and uses the Gerber name.
I ordered the sharpener with it for $8 bucks to help keep its edge and really like the sheath so you can hang this in the garage for storage. Make sure you use a stump or some wood underneath to help protect the edge for a longer lasting sharp edge, even ground strikes will really dull any axe edge. Highly recommend this axe, 36" handle is a must and gives the desired swing leverage!
