Nice Small Splitting Axe

Reviews: Fiskars 7856 X11 17-Inch Splitting Axe

I picked out the Fiskars X11 as a back-packable splitting axe with some chopping capability. I have a larger Fiskars 78576984 2 Lb. Chopping Axe that I use when camping from a base camp or car that I have been pleased with. In the price range I was looking there were but a few options for a reputable short axe with the Fiskars the clear standout.
In use the seventeen inch length is adequate for everything I need it for and gives more power than a shorter hatchet. When splitting is done from the knees there is protection from over swing and it feels safe to swing away. In general a longer handle is safer. The non-slip grip and handle horn aid in retention. I tend to choke up a bit when using the axe one handed because all of the weight is in the head. The balance point is at the joint of handle and blade. This is higher than wooden handled axes I have used. The extra length over a hatchet allows for a two handed grip when needed.

Overall I am happy with my purchase and look forward to many more years of service. I modified the carrying case but cutting off the top handle and it is now much easier to carry strapped to a pack. For general sharpening I use a Lansky Dual Grit Sharpener and a diamond plate (600-1600) for a final edge. Pair this with a folding saw such as the Snap-on Industrial Brand BAHCO 396-LAP 8 Inch Laplander Folding Saw and you won't have wood problems.
