Simply stunning performance

Reviews: Fiskars 7854 X25 28-Inch Splitting Axe

I am new to splitting wood, but after felling 12 large trees on my property, and with rising heating costs, I decided to make good use of all that free wood by installing a wood-burning stove. So now it came time to split it all. I started with a splitting wedge and an 8lb maul. The maul worked ok with decent technique, but many of the trees were long-standing dead. The wood was so hard that splitting a single piece might take an average of 20 strikes to even make a dent. Many pieces would simply not split, no matter what I tried. It was a lot of work for little payoff, and the splitting wedge could not even penetrate it. So I did some research, came across this axe and decided to give it a go. I ordered it saturday, and it arrived monday(super fast shipping!). I just took it out back and gave it a try. I am still astonished.

It is super light-weight, perfectly balanced, very sharp, and cracks even the hardest pieces with little effort. It is easily 10-20 times less difficult to split wood than with traditional designs, requires much less effort, and makes the process of chopping wood a zen experience. It's light enough that it can be wielded one-handed, and because it's so sharp, can be used to make cuts and chops to the strands of wood left over in some pieces that bind the halves together. The handle is fantastic at dissipating shock, so the impact on your hands is greatly minimized. After splitting a quarter of a cord tonight, there is no visible wear to the head, or haft. And it was great fun.

The plastic sheath/carry handle is a fantastic addition, keeping the edge protected, and making the whole unit easy to carry and store. If you have to chop wood, you must buy this thing. It's like a night-and-day difference. Even the hardest, largest pieces that I had to set aside, the ones I couldn't even dent, split after a few good hits. In fact, it's so effective, that you have to be more accurate with your hits, as it will just keep splitting the splits you've made. Simply fantastic design, a truly perfect investment that will save you time, sweat, pain, and might keep your back from getting injured.
