Reviews: Fiskars 7856 X11 17-Inch Splitting Axe
I was interested in picking up a camp axe - something a little larger than a hatchet, but not quite as big as an axe. After perusing some sites and watching some online reviews, I settled in on Fiskars. A quick review on Amazon and I found the one I wanted - the X11 Splitting Axe. 17" long with a splitting head on it. A little over 2 lbs, so very manageable size and weight-wise for a hike-in camp trip.
Yesterday I finally had a chance to give it a try on some 4-5" scrub trees in my yard. Un-b-lievable! This thing cuts like a hot knife thru butter. It comes with an incredibly sharp edge - more than some of my knives, actually!
Its well-designed wedged shaped head splits the wood and forces it apart. It also comes with a pretty cool protective cover. A little bulkier than a sheath, but perfect for storage and car camping, etc.
If you're looking for that "in between" axe - small enough to take camping but big enough to chop down smaller trees and split campfire wood - this one is it! I'm very impressed with it, and would recommend it to anyone.
